 Centering the Voices of Survivors

Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways we connect, share experiences and learn from one another. Storytelling has the unique power to inspire change and action in ways that statistics and data alone cannot.

The Office of Violence Prevention was honored to partner with the Department of Arts and Culture, the LA County Anti-Racism Diversity and Inclusion Initiative, and many agencies and community members to support the opportunity to center survivor voice. By sharing their stories, survivors helped us to better understand the impact of violence across the lifespan and where systems, practices and policies have supported survivors, where they have fallen short, and where opportunities for earlier intervention were missed. These stories confirm that violence is preventable and highlight how we can improve access to services earlier.

“It only takes one person to make a difference. One stranger’s smile can mean the difference between life and death for someone facing suicidal thoughts. One bystander can notice when someone is struggling and show them that they are seen. One person’s words may be the reason someone chooses to turn their entire life around.

May these stories remind us that each of us has a role to play in preventing violence and that even the smallest act of kindness can make a difference in someone’s life.” -Mia Livas Porter
