ASAM

  • From Assessment to Care Planning: The ASAM Criteria Third Edition for Prescribers (New)

    Description:
    This training introduces prescribers within the Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) provider network to the third edition of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria. Focusing on practical application, it explores how the ASAM Criteria supports clinical assessment, medical necessity determinations, care planning, and level of care placement. Prescribers will gain tools to deliver individualized, stage-matched care through case examples and decision-making strategies aligned with DMC-ODS requirements and person-centered care principles. Completion of this training fulfills the DHCS and SAPC requirement that providers under the DMC-ODS system obtain ASAM training and is intended only for staff whose scope of practice includes prescribing medications.

  • LPHA Series: What LPHAs Need to Know About the ASAM CONTINUUM

    Description:
    This training is part of the SAPC's advanced-level training series that is specifically designed for enhancing various clinical competencies of licensed-eligible and Licensed Practitioners of Healing Arts (LPHA). This training will begin with an overview of the development of the ASAM Criteria and the ASAM CONTINUUM to deepen participants’ understanding on the history, content, and psychometric properties of the ASAM CONTINUUM decision engine and its relationship with level of care (LOC) determinations. Participants will practice and improve their skills in integrating assessment data from different sources to determine appropriate LOC placement and establishing medical necessity for treatment. It will be followed by a special focus on advancing the SUD workforce’s clinical skills on administering and interpreting the ASAM CONTINUUM. Other important considerations on culture and special populations (including older adults, parents/prospective parents, involvement in safety-sensitive occupations, and involvement in the criminal justice system) will be discussed. Participants will also identify and resolve some common problems that occur in the ASAM CONTINUUM assessment review process.

    Description:
    This special training will provide a detailed review of the ASAM Continuum Assessment, with specific considerations for the practical uses of the assessment to determine, SUD Diagnosis, appropriate level of care and aid in initial treatment planning. By reviewing the ASAM Continuum Assessment domains and key questions, participants will build competency and proficiency in administering the tool, applying clinical and motivational interviewing techniques, and accurately interpreting assessment results to inform SUD diagnosis, level of care recommendations, and required clinical documentation. Case examples will be used to illustrate how to integrate findings from the ASAM Continuum Assessment with clinical insights from the treatment provider and recommended approaches to reconcile discrepancies between ASAM Continuum Assessment findings and clinician recommendations regarding level of care. This training will also provide updates to the ASAM CONTINUUM and provide real time demonstrations.

    Participants will develop a better understanding of the intent and purpose of the ASAM Continuum Assessment, including how to effectively use the tool within the LA County Substance Abuse Prevention and Control’s SUD continuum of care.

    Description:
    The substance use treatment screening tools training provides a detailed review of the two (2) screening tools, the ASAM CO-Triage Screening Tool and the ASAM Screener for Youth and Young Adults, that are used within the Los Angeles County SAPC network. Participants will learn how to integrate the screening results into the ASAM Continuum Assessment, with specific considerations for the practical uses of the screeners within the LA County Substance Abuse Prevention and Control's SUD continuum of care. The Service Bed and Availability Tool’s (SBAT) functionality and how to maximize this tool will be explored in this training.

    Description:
    This training will provide an introduction to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria, 3rd Edition. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of using a biopsychosocial assessment to determine the most appropriate level of care placement as well as develop an individualized treatment plan while taking into consideration a patient’s immediate needs and potential imminent danger. Participants will be given a case scenario for which they are to assess risk across the six (6) ASAM dimensions, document the rationale for these risk ratings, while determining the appropriate services to be made available to assist the patient in the recovery process. The ASAM levels of care, along with the levels of withdrawal management will be reviewed. Finally, an overview of the required services under the Drug Medi-Cal Waiver will be provided.

    Description:
    This interactive, skills-based, intermediate-level training will begin with a brief overview of the ASAM criteria (3rd Edition and a crosswalk between the levels of care articulated in the ASAM criteria and the levels of care defined by the DMC Waiver. Following the brief review of the ASAM criteria, participants will take a clinical vignette, develop risk ratings based upon a completed assessment, and then develop an individualized treatment plan to address the problem areas identified across each of the six (6) dimensions, including long- and short-term goals, and actions steps the patient and staff will implement. From the treatment plan, instruction will be given in developing notes that document progress on the treatment plan goals. Participants will practice drafting progress notes reflective of the problems, goals and action steps established on the treatment plan.

    Description:
    Alcohol Use Disorder is a chronic and complex disease that effects many throughout Los Angeles County. This live virtual webinar training will provide a comprehensive overview of the history of alcohol, the neurobiology of alcohol in a person’s brain and body including how addiction to alcohol starts, the different short term and long effects of alcohol and what happens to a person when they stop drinking alcohol. This training will discuss historical and modern treatment methods including Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) and an exploration of Evidenced Based Treatment (EBT) that may be used by attendees.

    Participants will also be engaged in discussion of how to fully utilize screening and assessment tools with individuals who are using alcohol. With the application of a vignette participants will have the opportunity to explore how to optimize interventions utilizing a clinical vignette.

    Description:
    Given the high prevalence of traumatic experience(s) and the pervasive nature of the impact of trauma among individuals who seek substance use treatment, providing trauma-informed care (TIC) in a substance use treatment context is considered best practice. Participants will learn key information about TIC which will enable them to recognize various signs of trauma and respond with a strength-based and culturally sensitive approach to foster resilience in patients with substance use disorders (SUDs). The training will provide an overview of TIC approach, followed by explaining the six (6) principles of TIC and applying them to a clinical case vignette. Participants will learn common co-occurring conditions that stem from traumatic experiences and SUD. Recommendations on trauma screening tools and effective copings skill for managing traumatic experiences will be provided to enhance substance use treatment engagement and outcomes. The training will conclude with a special focus on building resilience in patients with SUD by exploring the posttraumatic growth (PTG) concept.

    Description:
    The California Department of Health Care Services has launched California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal (CalAIM) to bring significant transformation to improve quality of life and healthcare outcomes for Medi-Cal members. Documentation reform, including changes to clinical documentation requirements effective on July 1st, 2022, are part of these CalAIM efforts. The purpose of this live virtual training is to assist SAPC network providers in streamlining the clinical documentation of patients’ treatment journeys in accordance with the new CalAIM requirements. During this training participants will learn how to incorporate the seven (7) required components into progress notes including information from assessments and Problem Lists. Clinical case examples will be used throughout the training to help providers practice documentation that is consistent with county, state, and federal regulations as well as best practices. Participants will also learn how to implement at least two (2) effective time management strategies to improve timelines of documentation. Time will be provided throughout the training for group discussion, polls, and chat questions.

  • Clinical Supervision for the Substance Use Treatment (SUT) Workforce as a (LE) & LPHA: A Competency-Based Approach

    Description:
    This training is designed for new and experienced Licensed Practitioners of the Healing Arts (LPHA) providing supervision to the Substance Use Treatment (SUT) workforce (including, AMFT, ACSW, APCC, and Substance Use Counselors). While the LPHA oftentimes has multiple roles, this training will focus on how to navigate the ethics and boundaries of their roles while working as a clinical supervisor. This training will provide an overview of supervision, the benefits when implemented effectively and the many models of supervision with a focus on the Competency-Based Approach. Supervisee competency will be discussed with the review of creating supervisee Individual Development Plans. Participants will have an opportunity to explore ways to increase their multicultural competency in their supervision of the SUT workforce. Vignettes and practical application of skills needed to improve supervisor competency will be reviewed and highlighted throughout the presentation materials.

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Relapse Prevention (RP) Strategies
    Number of CE credits: 3*
    *UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. UCLA ISAP is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.     Description:
    Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Substance Use Disorders (SUD) was initially directed toward preventing relapse to problematic drinking, and was later adapted for use with cocaine-dependent individuals. Since then it has become a mainstay of evidence-based SUD treatment. CBT for substance use disorders has demonstrated efficacy by itself and as part of combination treatment strategies. The purpose of this interactive one-day training is to provide participants with a detailed overview of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and relapse prevention (RP) strategies, the available resources and encourage use of these strategies in daily clinical practice. The training will be presented in the three parts, covering (1) the underlying principles of CBT and RP, as behavioral interventions used in the treatment of substance use disorders; (2) the specific elements of CBT in substance use disorder treatment, including practice with specific interventions (e.g., trigger-thought-craving-use sequence; drug refusal skills; abstinence violation syndrome, etc.); and (3) methods for implementing CBT strategies. The training will include trainer demonstrations, skill practice, and group discussions.

We will then differentiate between different substance use treatment services and their associated Medi-Cal service codes. Participants will have an opportunity to practice connecting different substance use services with their appropriate Medi-Cal service codes.

    Description:
    California’s Senate Bill (SB) 43 updated California’s definition of Grave Disability (GD), which is the basis of Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act which provides guidelines on involuntary holds and conservatorships. SB 43 provides an expanded definition of “basic needs” that will include personal safety and necessary medical care, in addition to food, clothing and shelter. The list of conditions which can be considered as a cause for Grave Disability was also expanded to include Severe Substance Use Disorders and/or co-occurring mental health. Los Angeles County will implement the LPS process in alignment with the new SB 43 definition of GD beginning January 1, 2026.

    Participants will also be engaged in discussions of how to fully understand the changes and updates of involuntary holds. With the application of clinical vignettes, participants will have the opportunity to explore the differences between the criteria for SB 43 (Severe Substance Use Disorder with Grave Disability) and what is not .     Description:
    This live virtual training will focus on information meant to inform participants about the potential risks of overdose specifically with opioid substances, focusing on skills to recognize and respond to an overdose safely. The training will identify ways of responding to an overdose with Naloxone, demonstrate the techniques used to administer Naloxone, and discuss other steps needed to ensure peoples’ health and safety. This training will review current substance trends specifically Fentanyl, harm reduction strategies, and Syringe Services Programs in Los Angeles County. This educational session is meant as a resource for specialty behavioral prevention and treatment providers to utilize when working with youth, transitional age youth (TAY) and adult populations who are considered at risk of developing substance use disorders. Maximizing engagement techniques will also be explored.

    Description:
    The purpose of this live virtual training is to assist SAPC network providers with recognizing, engaging and screening/assessing individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions. During this training participants will learn how to recognize the five (5) most common mental health conditions that co-occur with substance use disorders. A clinical vignette will be used throughout the training to help providers practice engaging with as well as screening and assessing those with co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions. Participants will also learn how to integrate three (3) key concepts of effectively working as an interdisciplinary treatment team while including the patient as a partner in care. Participants will have opportunities for active participation throughout the training through the use of group discussions, polls, and chat questions.

    The TGI Cultural Competence in Behavioral Health Service Provision is developed and conducted by The TransLatin@Coalition Institute, a nationally recognized organization founded by and for Transgender, Gender Diverse, and Intersex (TGI) people that is dedicated to creating systemic change through education, advocacy, and community empowerment. California is home to nearly 100,000 transgender and gender-expansive people. California Senate Bill 923 presents SAPC treatment provider agency staff with the opportunity to focus on elevating the quality of substance use disorder service provision for its transgender, gender-expansive, and intersex (TGI) members.

    SAPC and University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) hold a lecture series three times per year on current and emergent topics of interest in the substance use disorder research and treatment. Leading researchers and treatment practitioners provide attendees with state-of-the-art, evidence-based information on substance abuse treatment and prevention. UCLA-ISAP and SAPC currently provides continuing education units for counselors, clinicians, nurses, and other professionals in the substance abuse field who attend the lecture as well as CMEs for medical professionals.
