About Patient Safety Information Exchange (PSIE)
What is the Los Angeles County (LAC) Patient Safety Information Exchange (PSIE)?
- PSIE is a centralized, web-based system that provides infection preventionists (IP) and other healthcare personnel from hospitals and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) with the information needed to guide safe care and appropriate precautions for patients infected and colonized with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs).
- Healthcare facility personnel may search for MDRO status and history among their patients.
- In a future release, hospitals or SNFs that have the capability to send patient-identified electronic admission data will receive automated, real-time/near real-time email notifications when a patient with a history of MDRO is admitted to their facility. Following the email notification, users will need to log in to the PSIE system to securely view patient details. The automated notification of admitted MDRO patient feature is anticipated to be released in Fall 2024.
PSIE Training
Webinars to train users on PSIE are planned for the early access Release I of PSIE in Spring 2024. Video recordings will also be available soon afterwards. Please contact PSIE@ph.lacounty.gov for more information.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I get access to PSIE?
If you are a hospital or skilled nursing facility employee, please email PSIE@ph.lacounty.gov for more information and the registration process for PSIE. PSIE users are required to sign a data user agreement and complete a user registration form for access. PSIE is not available to the public.
2. Which MDROs are included in PSIE?
Cases of Candida auris, carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO), and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) among Los Angeles County residents are included in PSIE. PSIE does not include carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) or carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) that are not also carbapenemase-producing. These are not currently reportable in Los Angeles County.
3. Do I need to change the way that I report MDROs to LACDPH?
Healthcare facilities and laboratories that are required to report these MDROs will continue to report through REDcap, IRIS CRM, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), or electronic lab reporting (ELR). See the individual reporting instructions on the MDRO website: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/mdro/index.htm#reporting
