Integrating Medically Supportive Food and Nutrition into Health Care

The Medically Supportive Food and Nutrition Steering Committee launched a statewide survey to identify medically supportive food and nutrition services across California. These services include but not limited to food pharmacies, produce prescriptions, healthy groceries and medically tailored meals designed to prevent, reverse and treat chronic health conditions. The report, Integrating Medically Supportive Food and Nutrition into Healthcare, is a collaboration between SPUR, the Food as Medicine Collaborative and the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations — shows there is already a strong network of non-traditional providers, such as governmental departments and community-based organizations, poised to expand medically supportive food and nutrition services. However, to build on the existing network of providers, the health care system must address barriers to scaling.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) released an updated toolkit, Screen & Intervene: A Toolkit for Pediatricians to Address Foodpdf icon Insecurity, designed to help pediatricians identify and address childhood food insecurity. The toolkit provides information on how pediatricians can screen patients for food insecurity and connect patients and their families to federal nutrition programs and community resources.

The State Health Information Guidance (SHIG) Volume 2 - Guidance on Sharing Health Information to Address Food and Nutrition Insecurity in California aims to assist food provisioners, healthcare providers and social services staff to share patient/client information to support coordinated and integrated care and services. The SHIG Volume 2.1 clarifies existing federal and state laws that affect the disclosure and sharing of patient health and social services information.
