What is Depression?

Feeling depressed? You are not alone. Depression is a serious condition that affects millions of people. Depression is more than feeling upset or sad—it is a disorder that makes coping with daily life seem impossible. If you feel like you might be depressed or are experiencing the symptoms listed below, it is important to seek help from your health care provider or a mental health care professional like a therapist or a psychologist.

Symptoms of depression include:

  • Feelings of sadness or depressed mood

  • Loss or gain of appetite

  • Sleeping problems

  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness

  • Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy

  • Thoughts about harming yourself or others

  • Thoughts of suicide
