About the Department of Public Health

The Department of Public Health (DPH) in Los Angeles County is one of the largest public health departments in the nation and is nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board. The department has an annual budget of approximately $1.6 billion and a staff of over 5,500. DPH works to protect and improve the health and well-being of the 10 million residents within the County through a variety of programs, community partnerships, and services. The Director of DPH is Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd.

Areas in DPH where physicians work include HIV and STD; Tuberculosis Control; Immunization; Acute Communicable Disease Control; Community Health Services, Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention; Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health; Women’s Health; Environmental Health; Emergency Preparedness and Response; Children’s Medical Services; and Health Assessment and Epidemiology. DPH also provides free and/or low-cost services to those with no insurance or regular health care provider, including immunization and communicable disease testing and treatment at the 14 Public Health Centers located throughout LA County.
