Information for Schools

Studies show that adolescents are at very high risk for STD infection. Female teenagers are more susceptible to STDs due to having an immature cervix, a condition known as ectopy. As a result, there are high rates of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea among this population. Additionally, we are seeing a rise in new HIV infections among youth, especially gay youth.  Other reasons for the high prevalence of STDs and higher incidence of HIV among teenagers includes a lack of information, lack of insurance or other ability to pay for services, transportation issues, discomfort with facilities, concerns about confidentiality, unprotected intercourse, and substance use.

School-based programs that incorporate STD and HIV education into their curriculum help increase STD and HIV awareness among students. DHSP offers several resources to schools to help with their STD and HIV education and prevention efforts. Resources include general information, technical assistance in the form of curriculum and presentation development, staff trainings, presentations for students, free literature, free condoms for individuals and schools,  and more.

We also offer free materials, including posters, postcards, palm cards, and other materials related to our "Don't Think Know" campaign that promotes Chlamydia and Gonorrhea testing.  Additionally, our "Erase Doubt" campaign provides information on HIV testing and our "LA's Sex Symbol" campaign provides information on how to obtain free condoms.  Call (213) 744-3085 for more information.
