April 2022 Spotlight

April is Autism Acceptance Month and Autism Awareness Month. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by repetitive behaviors, challenges with speech and communication and limited interest in activities.  Children with ASD may experience oral health concerns like teeth grinding, tongue thrusting, dental caries/cavities, and gum disease.  Below is a list of Oral Health tips:

Oral Health Tips

  • To prevent teeth grinding, a mouth guard may be recommended by a dentist and used by a child, if tolerable.
  • To prevent tooth decay, brush teeth with fluoride toothpaste, twice a day, every day and floss, daily.  Also, sealants can help prevent cavities.  Here’s a video on how to help brush and floss teeth of a special needs child.
  • To reduce gum disease, the infection that damages the soft tissue and bone supporting the tooth, visit a dentist.

Remember, untreated cavities and overall poor oral health and hygiene can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing, and learning.  To find a dentist, please visit Smile, California or dial 2-1-1.
