Facts & Statistics
  • Nearly 5.3 million intimate partner victimizations occur each year among women ages 18 and older in the U.S. (CDC 2003).
  • More than 1 million women and 371,000 men are stalked by intimate partners each year in the U.S. (Tjaden and Thoennes 2000b).
  • Intimate partner violence occurs across all populations, irrespective of social, economic, religious, or cultural group (Heise and Garcia-Moreno 2002).
  • In 2003 there were 12,931 spousal abuse arrests in Los Angeles County and 48,854 arrests in California (State of California, Department of Justice)
  • Most of the intimate partner violence 911 calls in Los Angeles County are due to violent threats from an intimate partner using hands, fists, or feet as their weapon.

According to California Penal Code 13700(b), domestic violence means abuse committed against an adult or a fully emancipated minor who is a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant, former cohabitant, or person with whom the suspect has had a child or is having or has had a dating or engagement relationship. Law enforcement agencies record the total number of domestic violence calls, incidents in which weapons are involved, and, if so, what type of weapon. The data are reported for California, regions, cities and jurisdictions. Statistics are based on California Department of Justice data.
