Public Health Soil Testing Program Will Transition on August 15, 2026.

Our Public Health soil testing program is transitioning to the USC Clean Program. Public Health has worked closely with USC since the program's inception, and both programs use a similar approach to soil lead testing. A coordinated transition plan is in place to ensure residents continue to have seamless access to free soil lead testing services.

Last day to submit soil samples to our program is August 14, 2026.

Overview

In response to board motions by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Public Health is launching a new soil testing program. Up to $3 million from the Lead Paint Hazard Mitigation Program has been allocated to fund free soil lead testing for residents living within and downwind of the Eaton and Palisades Fires burn areas.

How It Works

STEP 1

Reference the target map below to view areas within and defined as the Eaton and Palisades fires burn areas. Soil samples can be submitted for testing even though they may not fall within the squares on the map.

STEP 2

Follow the Soil Sampling Collection Procedures carefully to collect your soil sample.

STEP 3

Print and complete the Soil Sample Submission Form and include it with your soil sample.

STEP 4

Drop off your soil sample.

Soil Sample Drop-Off Locations

Eaton Fire samples should be dropped off at:

One Stop Permit Center – Public Health Table
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM

Palisades Fire samples should be dropped off at:

Palisades Recovery Coalition
Hours: Monday-Friday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Residents can drop off soil samples at anytime in the outside drop off container.

STEP 5

Wait to receive your soil test results via email from the certified laboratory within 7–10 business days .

STEP 6

Visit the Guidance for Results section on how to interpret your soil screening results.

Target Area Map

Properties located in the Eaton and Palisades burn areas are prioritized for free soil testing under this program.
Soil samples from properties located within the burn scar, downwind of, and just outside, the Eaton and Palisades Fires areas can be submitted for testing even though they may not fall within the squares on the map.

FREE BLOOD LEAD TESTING
For Wildfire-Impacted Communities

Smoke, ash, and debris from wildfires may contain harmful contaminants, including lead.

If you are concerned about exposure to lead from wildfire, you can obtain blood lead testing one of two ways:
  • Visit Your Medical Provider
    • Ask your doctor for a blood lead test.
    • Testing is covered by most insurance plans, including Medi-Cal.
  • Go to a Quest Lab for a Free Blood Lead Test
    • Dial 1-800-LA-4-LEAD to request a free appointment through Quest Labs.
