Healthy Eating Active Communities Program

Obesity and its consequences such as diabetes are at epidemic levels among California children. The impact is especially significant in poor, ethnic and racial groups. Fortunately, obesity that results from unhealthy eating habits, inactivity and influenced by factors in social and physical environments is largely preventable.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health SPA 3 & 4 Area Health Office collaborated with the Healthy Eating Active Communities Program to start a Collaborative with the Baldwin Park Unified School District and the 57th Assembly District in order to execute a grant that has been awarded by The California Endowment which is a private, statewide health foundation. This four-year Initiative is focused in predominantly low-income, urban and rural communities in California.

Our objectives include improving the food and physical activity environments for school-aged children and to create a momentum for widespread changes in the policies and practices that contribute to the rising rates of childhood obesity.

Our activities will include improving access to physical activities and nutritious foods at schools, after-schools programs and neighborhoods. The Collaborative will work to develop policies and programs for safe neighborhoods and places to exercise, and that counteract the marketing of unhealthy foods to children.
