Many of us eat in a hurry, move in a hurry, run from one meeting to the next, and are pleased with our ability to multitask. When we bear witness to pain and suffering on a daily basis, we may eat, sleep, and dream our work. We are not fully present with our loved ones, when we’re not at work. We anticipate pain and suffering…seeing newly weds we think, “they look happy now, but wait it won’t last”. Some of us can get stuck in a state of hyper arousal and feel anxiety much of the time and this gets reinforced by cell phones and email, BlackBerrys and iPhones. It’s hard to unwind, even on vacation. It may take the first few days just to come into the present moment, and often, we get sick because we haven’t slowed down enough to listen to our bodies.
