Public Health Encourages Everyone to Celebrate Mother's Day Safely - 20 New Deaths and 415 New Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed 20 new deaths and 415 new cases of COVID-19. Of the 20 new deaths reported today, six people that passed away were over the age of 80, nine people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79, two people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64, and two people who died were between the ages of 30 and 49. One death was reported by the City of Long Beach.

To date, Public Health identified 1,235,422 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 23,995 deaths.

There are 379 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized and 23% of these people are in the ICU. Testing results are available for more than 6,571,000 individuals with 17% of people testing positive. Today's daily test positivity rate is 0.6%.

“Our hearts go out to everyone grieving the loss of a family member or friend," said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “While transmission is low and we continue to see declines in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, we are approaching the terrible milestone of 24,000 COVID-19 deaths in L.A. County. There continues to be higher risk of COVID-19 transmission and severe health outcomes among unvaccinated people. Please get vaccinated as soon as you can. Protecting yourself and your family by getting vaccinated is the best gift you can give this Mother's Day."

Public Health encourages everyone to enjoy Mother’s Day safely. If you're celebrating with someone elderly and they haven't been vaccinated, celebrate safely outdoors with masks and distancing or virtually. Gather safely, avoid large crowds and wear your mask when in businesses, stores, and restaurants. If you are traveling for Mother's Day, follow all local and national public health testing and quarantine guidelines. Vaccination centers are open on Mother's Day.

As there are more opportunities for intermingling with expanded re-openings, businesses must continue to adhere to workplace protocols that require infection control, occupancy limits, distancing, masking, and appropriate PPE that protect employees, customers and residents from COVID-19 as much as possible. Businesses must complete and implement their safety protocols and post them or a copy of their Los Angeles County COVID-19 Compliance Program certificate. Public Health inspectors are out and will provide any clarity or technical assistance should businesses need it.

Public Health encourages L.A. County businesses to participate in the COVID-19 Safety Compliance Certification Program. The program offers business owners and employees the opportunity to take a free online training about COVID-19 infection control protocols and allows businesses to self-certify that they are fully implementing the protocols in compliance with infection control and physical distancing requirements. To date, more than 26,000 employees and employers have completed the training.

COVID-19 vaccinations are available at County-run sites and many community sites without an appointment. Anyone 16 and older living or working in L.A. County can get vaccinated. You should bring a photo ID with you and teens 16 and 17 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Vaccinations are always free and open to eligible residents and workers regardless of immigration status.
