Raw Oysters Linked to 27 Cases of Gastrointestinal Illness

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating a cluster of gastrointestinal illnesses potentially linked to raw oysters consumed at four different local restaurants. There are 27 associated cases to date.

Public Health is currently working with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to investigate and confirm the source of this cluster of gastrointestinal illness cases.

At this time, Public Health warns residents — specifically those most vulnerable such as young children, older adults, and people who are immunocompromised — of the risks of consuming raw oysters.

“Until the source is confirmed, consumers should be cautious before eating raw oysters due to the potential risk of foodborne illness,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer. “If you are sick, avoid spreading illness by washing your hands frequently and cleaning frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, and kitchen countertops.”
