Public Health Reports 28 New Deaths and 1,285 New Positive Cases of Confirmed COVID-19 in Los Angeles County

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed 28 new deaths and 1,285 new cases of confirmed COVID-19. The number of daily new cases continue to indicate that COVID-19 is spreading throughout L.A. County communities. Of the new cases reported by Public Health today (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena), 72% occurred in people under the age of 50 years old.

To date, Public Health has identified 281,165 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 6,768 deaths.

The highest number of cases among all age groups in L.A. County are in residents between the ages of 30 and 49 years old at 35% of all cases. The second highest are among residents between the ages of 18 and 29 years old with 25% of all cases.

Because COVID-19 is widespread, businesses must continue to follow Public Health directives and implement all requirements in the business protocols. Public Health reminds restaurants, breweries and wineries that may be showing televised sporting events to adhere to Public Health protocols and directives to help prevent increases of COVID-19. These establishments must adhere to all Public Health protocols, including:

Of the 28 new deaths reported today (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena), nine people that passed away were over the age of 80, nine people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, seven people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64 years old, two people who died were between the ages of 30 and 49, and one person who died was between the ages of 18 and 29. Twenty-two people who died had underlying health conditions including six people over the age of 80 years old, eight people between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, five people between the ages of 50 and 64 years old, two people between the ages of 30 and 49 years old, and one person between the ages of 18 and 29 years old.

"We wish healing and peace to the families and friends that are grieving the loss of their loved one to COVD-19," said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. "We are sadly reporting an additional death in a young adult under the age of 29 years old that has died due to COVID-19. Please remember that even young people can have serious illness if infected with this virus and have severe outcomes. In order to save lives and slow COVID-19 spread, everybody has to do as much as possible to avoid being exposed to COVID-19. This means making the personal decision to avoid non-essential activities and, when out in public, always wearing a face-covering, washing hands frequently, and staying at least six feet apart from others not in your household and away from others if you are sick. The more this happens, the better our case and test positivity rates will be in the weeks to come."

Ninety-three percent of the people who died from COVID-19 had underlying health conditions. Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 6,373 people (99 percent of the cases reported by Public Health); 51% of deaths occurred among Latino/Latinx residents, 23% among White residents, 14% among Asian residents, 10% among African American/Black residents, less than 1% among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander residents and 1% among residents identifying with other races. Upon further investigation, 29 cases and one death reported earlier were not L.A. County residents.

There are 701 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 and 26% of these people are in the ICU. Testing results are available for more than 2,801,000 individuals with 9% of all people testing positive.
