Community Healing and Trauma Prevention Center Hours Extended

LOS ANGELES - In the wake of Nipsey Hussle's passing, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is extending the Community Healing and Trauma Prevention Center’s hours on April 1 through April 5, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to ensure support for anyone in need.

“The scourge of gun violence has affected too many in our community,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said. "It’s not just the pain and destruction that happens to an individual in the moment. It’s much more than that. It’s also the collective trauma that families and communities experience in dealing with these tragedies.”

"During this time of mourning, we invite anyone that needs access to grief and loss services and other support to visit our Community Healing and Trauma Prevention Center,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Los Angeles County Public Health.

Far too many people in LA County are being injured and killed by violence across the lifespan whether it be by homicide, suicide or intimate partner violence. This violence is preventable. The Center provides a safe community space to support dialogue and mobilization of community resources, every day, and especially during these tragic events.

The Center is located at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Public Health, 11833 Wilmington Ave., Los Angeles CA 90059. Grief and loss services are available and walk- ins are welcomed.

This loss and this first day of National Public Health Week, is a reminder that it takes community voices and multi-sector collaboration to address population health issues, like community violence. On Friday, April 5, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas along with Public Health and community partners will open the Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Public Health in Willowbrook. The OVP will launch the County’s multidisciplinary effort to reduce violence and address trauma through local place-based strategies and system changes.
