Mission Statement

To ensure the availability of high-quality and comprehensive health data on the Los Angeles County population and to facilitate its use for public health assessment, policy development, and program planning and evaluation.

Organization Overview

The Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology (OHAE) is overseen by the Department of Public Health's Chief Science Officer. Under the leadership of Dr. Margaret Shih, OHAE consists of several units: »Data Collection and Analysis Unit oversees the registration of both births and deaths that occur in the County; »Health Assessment Unit is responsible for developing and analyzing the Los Angeles County Health Survey (LACHS), a population-based telephone surveys for both adults and children; »Epidemiology Unit specializes in the fields of epidemiology, geography, and demography; »Institutional Review Board reviews any public health-related research projects that involve the collection and/or analysis of data from or about human subjects; and »Policy Analysis Unit collaborates with other Department's Programs to conduct economic evaluation and other analytic studies of public health programs and policies.
