Specific Programs

  • Drowning Prevention: W.A.T.C.H., an educational program developed by Los Angeles County Fire and the Department of Health Services to increase awareness of the risk of bodies of water and children. Coordinator: Jim DeCarli, MPH, CHES.

  • Child Passenger Safety Seat Program: A program that provides education and a voucher to low income families for the purchased of a child passenger safety seat. Five community based agencies provide education and vouchers to qualified families. More than 2,500 low income families a year are provided with information and a safety seat by CBOs. In addition, safety seats are distributed by 3 county hospitals to mothers of newborns. Program Administrator: Voncille McKinney.

  • Pre-school Pedestrian Injury Prevention Program: An educational curriculum for pre-school children in public preschools, their teachers and caretakers. The program has been evaluated and shown to be effective in changing behaviors among the children, changing knowledge, attitude and behaviors of parent/caretakers and is an important teaching tool for the teachers. "Safety Sam" has a teachers guide, a storybook, activity book, classroom posters, and classroom sidewalk and street models. Program Coordinator: Todd McNairy, MPH.

  • Safe Communities: The Safe Communities Project is located within the City of Pasadena. The Safe Communities coalition includes Pasadena City Schools, PTA, Fire, Police & Public Works Departments, the LA Safe Kids Coalition, UCLA Injury Prevention Research Center, community groups and members of the community working together to reduce motor vehicle related injuries, particularly pedestrian injuries. Program Facilitator: Todd McNairy, MPH.

  • Violence Prevention Coalition: The mission of the VPC is to effect the reduction of violence and its impact on the residents of LA County through participation and collaboration of a multi- disciplinary network. The VPC consists of more than 900 agencies and individuals dedicated to reducing violence through a public health approach. The VPC provides technical assistance, and training to neighborhood groups.   • Domestic Violence Epidemiology: A study of domestic violence related injuries using law enforcement data. Training is provided to health care providers on the recognition, diagnosis, treatment, referral and reporting of domestic violence. Research Analyst III: Sung-Hye Yu, PhD.

  • Firearm Injury Taskforce: A taskforce of County Departments is attempting to link data sources in order to fully describe the magnitude of firearm injuries in the County.

  • Injury Surveillance: Reports on injury morbidity and mortality in Los Angeles County, including maps and special studies. Public inquiries regarding injuries are answered. Epidemiologist: Isabelle Sternfeld, MSPH.

  • Evaluation: Evaluations for program effectiveness are designed, implemented and reported to public and private agencies and community based programs.

    About Injury & Violence Prevention Program (IVPP)

    The Injury & Violence Prevention Program (IVPP) of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is a part of the Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Division. The IVPP monitors the occurrence of intentional and unintentional injuries among the residents of Los Angeles County and implements prevention programs to reduce morbidity and mortality due to injuries. The goal of the program is to reduce the leading causes of injury related death and disability for the Los Angeles County population.
