Findings from the Healthy Food Access Survey: A Survey of CalFresh Healthy Living Participants (2023)
The
Nutrition and Physical Activity Program
partnered with
Harder+Company Community Research
to conduct an intercept survey at food and
produce distribution events facilitated by
CalFresh Healthy Living funded partners across
Los Angeles County. The report,
Findings from the Healthy Food Access
Survey: A Survey of CalFresh Healthy Living
Participants
includes demographic characteristics of a sample
of adults who attended food distribution events
during 2021-2023 and provides a profile of the
demographic characteristics, household food
insecurity data, satisfaction and experiences
with CalFresh Healthy Living participation, and
dietary consumption. The report also includes
recommendations to inform the Nutrition and
Physical Activity Program.

Public Health Releases Report Showing Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Pose Ongoing Concern to Health of Youth in Los Angeles County (2022)
The Los
Angeles County Department of Public Health
released a new report,
Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption Among
Children and Adolescents in Los Angeles
County.
The report shows that consumption of
sugar-sweetened beverages remains an ongoing
concern to the health of children and
adolescents in Los Angeles County. The report
shows stark disparities in sugar-sweetened
beverage consumption among racial, ethnic,
geographic, and socioeconomic groups and draws
on data from the most recent Los Angeles County
Health Survey. The report concludes with
recommendations to reduce disparities in
sugar-sweetened beverage consumption among
children in Los Angeles County.

Public Health release a report,

on the state of food insecurity in Los Angeles County as well
as recommended strategies for reducing food insecurity
and improving food equity. A two-page

Exploring the Feasibility of Implementing Healthy Food Pantries in Los Angeles County (2019)
The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program
partnered with HUMANist, Inc. to assess the
feasibility of implementing healthy food
pantries in Los Angeles.
The brief,

includes key informant interviews with staff
from five healthcare clinics that have
implemented food insecurity screening, as
well as an intercept survey with over 1,000
clinic patients. The brief provides detailed
information about patients’ experience with
food insecurity, perceptions of health care
provider sensitivity to food insecurity, and
lessons learned from agencies conducting
food insecurity screening in low-income
clinics.

Food Recovery and Distribution in Los Angeles County: Analyzing Food Waste Prevention Opportunities to Address Food Insecurity And Climate Change food recovery and distribution (2019)

partnered with
Public Health Alliance of Southern
California
to conduct an assessment of the food recovery
and distribution system in Los Angeles County.
The report,

Angeles County: Analyzing Food Waste
Prevention Opportunities to Address Food
Insecurity and Climate Change
, includes interviews from 14 organizations that
are either currently engaged, were previously
engaged in, or are interested in engaging in
food recovery or distribution activities. The
report outlines the current strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the
food recovery and distribution system and
outlines recommendations to enhance and expand
the current system.

Public Health released a report, Food Security in LA County, on the state of food insecurity in the County. This report includes recommendations on multi-sector partnerships and innovative ways to increase access to healthy foods.

Briefs

Nutrition Education and Behavior Change: Findings from the CalFresh Health Living Program (2025)
As part of the CalFresh Healthy Living Program, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health's Nutrition and Physical Activity program partnered with 15 agencies to deliver and evaluate series-based nutrition education for adults. This
brief report
describes program participants and summarizes changes in their dietary habits, food resource management, and physical activity behaviors before and after nutrition education classes.

Public Health Releases New CalFresh Healthy Living Food Pantry Survey Results (2025)
As part of the CalFresh Healthy Living Program, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health partnered with community based organizations and food banks to implement the Nutrition Pantry Program with food pantries.
A Food Pantry Survey study
was conducted with clientele at food pantry sites across Los Angeles County to understand the impact of the Nutrition Pantry Program and their potential contribution to healthy food consumption and decreases in unhealthy food consumption.

Food Distribution Efforts in Los Angeles County (2018)
The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program partnered
with
RAND Corporation
to conduct an evaluation of a local food
distribution project. The brief,

from eight Public Health SNAP-Ed funded agencies that were
working on food distribution, as well as
intercept surveys with participants across five
food distribution sites. The brief provides
detailed information about participants’
experience with food distribution, as well as
barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for
agencies that are conducting food distribution.
