Mosquitoes in LA County

With the mild weather in Los Angeles County, fall may seem like summer all year long. This fall season, stay healthy while enjoying activities with family and friends. Here’s some tips to fall into health.

IT’S FLU SEASON

Avoid being sick in bed. Get immunized instead. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu is by getting the annual flu immunization.

  • What is the flu? Influenza (aka the "flu") is a contagious illness that causes fever and headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches.
  • Fight Flu: Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others.
  • You can’t miss it: The flu immunization is available at all Public Health clinics, local pharmacies, and your doctor’s office.

NOVEMBER IS AMERICAN DIABETES MONTH

World Diabetes Day is November 14, 2018

  • Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects us all. Sadly, people with diabetes are often blamed and stigmatized. Understand and “un-learn” common diabetes myths.
  • For those diagnosed with diabetes, the disease impacts their decisions every day. Share stories of #EverydayReality of diabetes and learn more at the American Diabetes Association.
  • Prevent diabetes from becoming the everyday reality for the 84 million people at risk. Encourage everyone in your community to take the risk test.

FALL BACK

When Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00 a.m. on November 4, there will be less daytime as it gets darker earlier. Be cautious, alert, and aware when you’re outdoors at dusk and after dark.

  • Drive safely: Keep you head up and your phone down. Texting can wait. Watch the road for cyclists, walkers and runners.
  • Walk this way: Use designated crosswalks or stop lights. Look both ways before you cross. Make eye contact with the driver before you step off the curb.
  • Gear up for safety: Always wear your helmet while riding your bike or scooter. Wear light-colored or reflective clothes and shoes at night.

STOP THE SPREAD OF GERMS

As the weather changes and flu season begins, it’s important to stop the spread of germs so you can stay safe and healthy.

  • Cover your cough: When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Cough or sneeze into your sleeve or elbow – not your hands.
  • Wash your hands: often to keep them clean and germ-free. Lather up with soap and water for at least 15-20 seconds, then rinse and dry completely.
  • Keep it clean: Always wash your hands before you begin work, before and after every meal, and after you use the restroom or change diapers.
