How do I eat healthy while eating out?

Eating at restaurants or ordering take-out is fun and is often necessary, but eating at restaurants can lead to overeating and can get expensive.

Here are some tips for making healthy, budget-friendly choices when ordering from a menu:

  • Aim for a balanced plate: If your carb-heavy meal comes with french fries, ask if it's possible to get a salad instead. Drink plenty of water throughout your meal!

  • Enjoy your food - don't eat too fast: It takes your brain 20-minutes to realize your stomach is full.

  • Turn one meal into two: Many restaurants have huge portion sizes, often enough for 2-3 people. See if you feel satisfied after eating half your meal. Take a break before finishing off the plate. If you're full, pack half the meal in a to-go box for tomorrow's lunch.

  • Get food to share: You don't need an entire plate of nachos for yourself. Splitting your meals with a friend means you can also split the bill!

  • Have a snack: Arriving to a meal starving almost guarantees you'll overeat. Eating a light snack (maybe a banana or some nuts) about an hour before your meal can take the edge off your hunger. It helps you avoid choosing food impulsively and can save you money.
