Obesity
A recent study done in Los Angeles County revealed that obesity
or overweight is a serious problem among children and adolescents.
To address this widespread health concern, CHI is engaged in a
three-fold effort to address obesity, including promoting physical
activity and healthy eating, educating families on how to prevent
obesity, and ensuring healthcare providers have appropriate knowledge
and resources to address childhood overweight/obesity.
Blue Ribbon Task Force
In 2002, CHI provided staff support to a Blue Ribbon Task
Force on Children and Youth Physical Fitness, established by
the Board of Supervisors to address the growing national epidemic
of child obesity. The Task Force Report entitled “Paving
the Way for Physically Fit and Healthy Children: Findings and
Recommendations,” was submitted to the Board of Supervisors
who approved the six key recommendations.
Physical Activity and Nutrition Task Force
As part of the efforts mentioned above, CHI convenes the
Physical Activity and Nutrition Task Force (PANTF) to work on
implementing the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Task Force
report.
