Public Health Laboratory - Clostridium botulinum Culture

Acceptable specimens: serum, whole clotted blood, feces, sterile water enema, tissue, exudate or swab samples from the wound.
Blood must be drawn before administration of C. botulinum antitoxin.
Stool specimen may be collected before or after C. botulinum antitoxin is administered. Do not collect from toilet, use newspaper, wax paper or bedpan. Submit approximately 100 gm of stool.
Place specimens other than serum or blood in sterile screw cap container. See instructions for collection of blood and serum.
Store refrigerated and transport on cold pack.
