Driver Distraction - On-Board Navigational Systems

While on-board navigational systems are becoming more popular, newer voice activated options are less distracting to the driver.

On-board navigational systems are becoming more population and even standard options on many cars. While these devices are helpful for finding your way, they can also be a major distraction to the driver. The facts below illustrate how an on-board navigational system can distract a driver:

Risk of Use While Driving What You Can Do?
  • Entering destination information and reading the display, while driving is a primary distraction to the driver. But there are options you can take to reduce this risk.
  1. Voice input and voice output systems can significantly reduce the distraction associated with navigational systems. These are also more ergonomic and safer than visual-manual entry systems (Tijerina et al, 1998).
  2. Navigational systems that include turn-by turn instructions, rather than complex information, are less distracting to the driver (Dingus et al, 1995).
