Intimate Partner Violence & Guns
In abusive relationships, guns are often used to threaten and intimidate, as well as to injure or kill (Smith, 2001)
Firearms are used in 59% of all intimate partner deaths of women two-thirds of intimate partner violence murders of spouses or ex-spouses, or boyfriends or ex-boyfriends (U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2002)
Intimate partner violence with guns is linked to murder-suicide. Whereas one-third of men who shoot and kill their partners also kill themselves (Barber C, 2003; Campbell J, 2003)
