The 2010 American Dietary Guidelines provide recommendations to help us achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease, and promote overall health.
The guidelines emphasize three major goals for Americans:
- Consume more of certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood.
- Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, and refined (white) grains.
- Balance calories with physical activity to manage weight.
