March 2008
"Communicating Effectively With Print Materials"
and "How to Get Published: From Conference to Press"
Health Education Administration partners with the
Pacific Public Health Training Center (PPHTC) to provide
trainings that not only increase knowledge but also
provide opportunities to practice newly acquired skills.
As a result, there are occasions when the Health
Education Network (HEN) hosts more than one activity.
March 2008 was one of these months.
Being able to effectively communicate health messages is one of a health educator's
primary roles. Yet so often health educators are faced with challenges preventing
them from creating the most effective materials.
At the "Communicating Effectively with Print Materials"
meeting, USC Assistant Professor Tess Cruz detailed the process
of creating of successful print materials, from audience background assessments to
message design and evaluation of the final product. Rose Anne Rodriguez, Esq.,
Director of the LA County DPH Office of External Relations and Communications outlined
her office's roles and how health educators can and should access the communication
team's expertise.
Finally, Health Educator Kim Kisler unveiled the newly created Health Education
Materials Development and Review manual and process. This development and review
process will assist County Programs and SPAs create materials using best practice,
with input from the community and health education experts.
Communicating one's successes and challenges is an
integral part of advancing the practice of health
education. In an effort to support DPH staff's
publishing efforts, PPHTC sponsored an all day training
at the UCLA extension. Dr. Michelle Wood guided
participants through the process of using one's existing
presentation as a framework for a journal article.
