The Chief of Family Support provides services to families of children who receive care through
Children’s Medical Services (CMS); represents CMS to parent organizations in the community and
community providers; and supports CMS department-wide to provide services in a family centered manner.
California Children’s Services (CCS) is the largest program under CMS.

For CMS Families, the Chief of Family Support:
|
|
- Provides information on how to use the CMS system;
- Provides parent-to-parent support;
- Helps families to

- make informed choices for their child's health;

- get care coordination;

- become more effective advocates for their children.

For community-based organizations (CBOs) and community providers:
|
|
- Provides information on CMS;
- Acts as a liaison between CBOs and CMS;
- Works with CBOs to develop programs that benefit families of children with special health care needs;
- Assists health care providers and others to better understand family needs, family perspectives and to improve service systems to mutual benefit.

For the CMS program:
|
|
- Provides input and recommendations to CMS department-wide to become more family-centered, along federal and state performance measure guidelines;
- Emphasizes the need for family-centered care and the unique perspective of families of children with special healthcare needs.

Family support services include:
|
|
- Family and staff training and education;
- Editing and developing written materials to be family-friendly;
- Parent/professional relationship-building activities;
- Participation on committees and boards;
- Policy analysis and recommendations.
