Zika Virus
Zika is a disease caused by a virus that is mostly spread through
the bite of a special type of mosquito, the Aedes mosquito.
While Aedes mosquitoes have been found in Los Angeles County, we
have not found any mosquitoes infected with Zika virus. To date, all
cases of Zika in Los Angeles County acquired their infection when
traveling outside of California. Information on number of Zika cases
detected in Los Angeles County is available in
this report.
Travelers may be at risk of
infections spread through mosquito bites while traveling outside Los
Angeles County. Review destination-specific risk and prevention
measures prior to travel here.
Locations where Zika has been detected is available
HERE.
Please note: Given global decline in the
number of Zika cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) issued a guidance statement in November 2019 that no longer
recommends serological testing for Zika even in symptomatic
returning travelers. This is due to the unreliability and
cross-reactivity of the Zika antibody tests. If suspected, Zika
nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) should be conducted in
conjunction with testing for dengue, which is occurring more
commonly around the world.
