Acute Communicable Disease Control
Outpatient Care Team

Mission: The mission of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health's Outpatient Care Team is to enhance infection prevention and control in outpatient settings in Los Angeles County through strengthened communications and collaboration.

Given the rapid growth and complexity of procedures performed in outpatient settings, enhancing patient safety and minimizing risk are critical. Since 2003, the Healthcare Outreach Unit has been working together with hospitals and other healthcare facilities to reduce healthcare-associated infections and improve emergency preparedness. In 2014, the Outpatient Care team was created to protect patient safety in outpatient settings by adapting successful infection prevention strategies for use in outpatient settings, reviewing infection control protocols, supporting set up and analysis using the National Healthcare Safety Network, investigating outbreaks, and serving as a resource for healthcare-associated infection reporting, prevention, and control.

Ambulatory Surgery Center Infection Control Consultations

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) is pleased to invite local ambulatory surgery centers (ASC) to participate in a new project:

Los Angeles County Ambulatory Surgery Center Infection Control Consultations

LACDPH is seeking volunteer ASCs to take part in free infection control consultations. These will be conducted on-site, are expected to last one day, and can be arranged at the convenience of the facility. Consultations will focus on: hand hygiene, personal protective equipment use, injection safety, device reprocessing and sterilization, and environmental cleaning. A comprehensive, detailed, written infection control assessment of the facility will be provided following the visit. All findings will remain confidential and no penalties will be imposed. We encourage all ASCs in Los Angeles to take part in this opportunity to improve the infection control of their facility free of charge.

To volunteer, please contact Kelsey OYong at, or by calling 213-240-7941. For questions, please contact Kelsey OYong or Dr. Dawn Terashita at, or by calling 213-240-7941. We appreciate your consideration of this important patient safety endeavor and look forward to your participation.

Clean Hands Safe Injections Initiative

LACDPH has partnered with the Health Services Advisory Group (HSAG) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to help ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) in California increase infection control through safe injection practices and improved hand hygiene. Interested CMS-participating ASCs are encouraged to visit for more information.

Infection Prevention Education (CME on Demand)

LACDPH has partnered with the Institute for Medical Quality to produce two infection prevention webinars for healthcare staff in outpatient settings. The presentation is a two-part series; the first, “Infection Prevention Basics,” is intended to instruct all healthcare personnel in outpatient settings on the fundamentals of patient safety and infection prevention. The second part, “Building an Infection Prevention Program,” will assist facility directors and administrators in incorporating the essential elements of an infection control program into their outpatient setting. Each part is 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit.™

Part One: Infection Prevention Basics

Part Two: Building an Infection Prevention Program

For a limited time, LACDPH will be providing the presentations at no cost. To use this discount, enter “LACNTY1” as a coupon code during payment. Once exhausted, the normal registration fee of $30 will apply.
