Every year, hundreds of people in Los Angeles County get whooping cough (also known as pertussis) and in California in 2010, there were more cases reported than in any other year since 1947.

Whooping cough, a respiratory infection, usually starts off like a cold but after several weeks, symptoms get worse and people begin to have sudden uncontrollable attacks of coughing. Many people recover from whooping cough without treatment, but when left untreated, it can get serious fast, especially for infants. In Los Angeles County in 2010, four infants died from whooping cough.

Whooping cough can be serious, but can be prevented by getting recommended whooping cough vaccinations.
