PNEUMOCOCCAL IMMUNIZATION RESOURCE KIT
Pneumocccal immunizations protect against three conditions that can lead to severe illness and even death:
  • Pneumococcal pneumonia, a serious infection in the lungs.
  • Bacteremia, which can result in a blood infection that kills 1 out of every 5 people who get it.
  • Bacterial meningitis, an infection in the brain and spinal cord. It can cause deafness, seizures, and brain damage and kills 3 out of 10 people who get it.

Because pneumococcal disease is also a common complication of influenza, getting vaccinated now can also prevent complications of the Seasonal and Pandemic H1N1 Influenza (formerly known as the swine flu).

Please join the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Immunization Program in promoting pneumococcal immunizations. Download the “Pneumococcal Immunization Resource Kit”, which includes a variety of materials, many customizable, designed to help health plans encourage their members to be vaccinated and help providers promote pneumococcal immunizations. While the materials were developed with health plans in mind, other healthcare agencies and community-based organizations may find them useful in promoting pneumococcal immunizations as well.

The Pneumococcal Immunization Resource Kit includes:

  • Two Patient Article Templates
  • Two Patient Letter Templates
  • A Provider Article Template
  • A Pneumococcal Immunization Tools & Resources List
  • Downloadable Patient Education Materials
  • A Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPSV) Fact Sheet
  • Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices Recommendations for Pneumococcal Vaccination
