PRETEEN VACCINES
Recommended Preteen Immunizations

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that 11-12 year olds receive the following vaccines:

  • Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine
In California, all students entering 7th grade need to show proof of a Tdap (pertussis booster) shot before starting school.
  • HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine
Boys and girls need 3 shots for full protection.
  • Meningococcal vaccine
Preteens need one shot at 11-12 years of age and a booster at age 16. If the first dose is received after the 16th birthday, a booster is not needed.
  • Influenza (flu) vaccine
Preteens and teens need a flu vaccine every year.
  • Chickenpox
Many children did not get their second chickenpox shot. Check with the doctor to see if a dose is due.
WHERE TO GET PRETEEN VACCINATIONS IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY

If you have health insurance, your best source for vaccination is your regular clinic or provider office. Vaccinations are also available in community clinics for preteens who do not have health insurance coverage or a regular health provider.
